India has a well established leather industry that is present across three
regions. In India, where the production of leather and leather products is by
and large cluster centric, Kanpur Leather Cluster is a major one amongst them.
A large part (nearly 60-65 per cent) of the production is done by the
small/cottage sector. The cluster has diversified range of products but is
mainly famous for processing of buffalo hides, making safety shoes, sandals
& chappals and Saddlery & Harness.
The history of manufacturing of leather & leather products in this cluster
dates back to 150 years when British set up factories for production of shoes
and saddlery items to meet mainly the requirement of military. Today, with
governmental support and other plus factors, Kanpur cluster has become a major
exporting centre for these items. It is a global player in upholstery leather,
footwear and leather goods.
At present this cluster has a concentration of units producing semi
finished/finished leather/footwear/and saddlery & harness items. In recent
times a few units have come up for making leather garments and leather goods
also. In addition, Kanpur Cluster also situates many units involved in tanning
of leather. In all there are about 1600 units engaged in production of leather
& leather products and total volume of business of this cluster is about
Rs. 2900 crores.

The Kanpur Leather Cluster had been facing challenges which have now begun to
extinguish with the essential support of business development services jointly
initiated in the wake of massive crunch of skilled shop-floor workers. Due to
pitfalls earlier and to an extent still currently, the industries were losing
out on booking orders from international buyers and missing production
deadlines.
In the recent years, with the state as well as national and international
support, the Kanpur Leather sector has benefited from sizeable investments in
order to meet new standards and prosper. New machineries and technologies have
been introduced to the advantage of the leather producers. Alongside, there
also have been immense interest and forward steps from individual companies. It
has resulted in the evolution of a thoroughly capable leather cluster into
promising, in general, of global business achievements.
