International Leather Industry

  • Totally, about 18 billion square feet of leather is produced worldwide by the leather industry a year, which comes to a total estimated value of about US$ 40 billion (of plain leather). The value of the leather industry worldwide as evaluated from the face of retailing would instead be a lot high.

  • And today, it is observably evident that more developing countries are evolving as the global leather industry’s distinct production hubs. Statistics show that over 60% of the world's leather production is from the said developing countries, and it is good to see an upward growth there in that too. The proportion is even rising.

  • Of the 100 % of world’s annual leather production, an estimated 65% of it goes into leather footwear production alone. The global footwear production amounts to around 11 billion pairs, which at wholesale prices comes to be an approximated worth of US$ 150 billion.

  • Again, the value of leather products would be higher at the retail level; and if commodities like automobiles, aircrafts and others that contain leather are counted, the value would largely exceed the vertical value of the footwear alone. Particularly for the worldwide automotive industry, the gauged leather production value is of worth US$ 1,350 million.

  • Worldwide, the tanning industry alone is estimated to provide employment to more than 500,000 people. And the employment numbers in the downstream production outfits may even add to this number significantly.

  • Including international trade in raw hides and skins, partially processed leather, finished leather, leather components and leather products, the leather industry is far bigger than just the commonly recognized goods.
